HEIC to JPG converter on mac

Summary: Here is my script that converts HEIC to JPG on the mac.

In iOS 11 Apple replaced the JPEG image format with the new HEIC alternative. So what is HEIC, what is HEIF?

HEIC is the file format name Apple has chosen for the new HEIF standard. HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image Format. It is a more streamlined way to store image files. It uses advanced, modern compression methods allowing digital photographs to be created in smaller files sizes retaining higher image quality than its JPEG predecessor. HEIF is based on the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Compression) or H.265 video format already used on newer iPhones.

While HEIC is now the native automatic format of taking photos on the iPhone if you want to upload them to an image storage service like smugmug.com or any such in the market out there it doesn’t quite recognise this newish format.

I have written a simple script/workflow that helps convert Apple iPhone’s HEIC to JPG on the mac. You’d need to download this file and install it on your mac. Download > unzip and you are done. Find your .HEIC file, right click and you would notice it gives you an option to convert to JPG.

NOTE: Make sure you back a backup of your .HEIC file in case you wish to keep the original.
