Fujifilm X100F and fat thumb / by Amit Karmakar

My fat finger problem - notice my thumb always rests on the joystick I don't know about you but I definitely think my fingers are a little fatter than normal. When holding any small camera in hand it poses a challenge to accidentally press a button or two. I have done this a million times with my previous small cameras Fujifilm X70, Fujifilm X100T, Ricoh GR2... and the trendy seems to continue with my all new Fujifilm X100F. With the x100F the joystick is an added feature carried down from the X-Pro2. The previous X100 series models didn't have it. Unfortunately for me, just where the joystick sits is exactly where my thumb rests while holding the camera and I have often bumped it around and lost the 'decisive moment'!

Luckily, this problem can very easily be averted.

The fat thumb problem

My 'fat' right hand thumb tends to sit on the joystick of the Fujifilm X100F and 9 times out of 10 I land up accidentally bumping the focus points off the centre!  I want to deactivate that joystick goodness! How do I do it?

There are 2 solutions to this problem. My preferred solution is A

Solution A

Lock that Joystick down to the centre point. I prefer the centre point. You can lock it down to any reachable position on your viewfinder. To do this the steps are as follows:

  1. Press MENU OK button
  2. Go to SET UP Screen > BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > FOCUS LEVEL  SETTING > PUSH TO UNLOCK*
  3. Hit MENU OK button.

* the good thing about setting it to 'PUSH TO UNLOCK' is that if you are at a scene where you quickly need to change your centre point focus you can override the joystick setting but simply pressing it.

Solution B

  1. Invest in a Thumbs up EP-5S. They are available in Silver and black. or,
  2. shop around on ebay. there are lots of varieties to chose from. The price, look and sizing vary. If they match the X100 series they are bound to fit on the Fujifilm X100F

Happy shooting without the joystick drama! Enjoy your Fujifilm X100F!
